Pre and Post Menstrual Tension

Although the causes of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) are not clear, it is generally believed to be linked to hormonal changes during the menstural cycle, and can affect menstruating women of any age.  Symptoms occur a week or two before a period and reduce once menstruation has started, although in some cases symptoms can show after a period.  PMS ends with the menopause, but women face other issues related to this.

Few women get a formal diagnosis but if you recognise any of these you have probably experienced PMS:

  • Acne
  • Breast swelling and tenderness
  • Feeling tired
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Upset stomach, bloating, constipation, or diarrhoea
  • Appetite changes or food cravings
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Trouble concentrating or remembering
  • Poor co-ordination
  • Tension, irritability, mood swings or crying spells
  • Anxiety or depression

Reflexology may help some symptoms of PMS  - by encouraging deep relaxation it may allow you to improve your sleep patterns.  Stimulating your body's natural painkillers can help to give pain relief and over time your hormones may become more balanced, thereby reducing the symptoms further.
